The Evolution of Spiral Disks

چکیده
We report on aspects of an observational study to probe the mass assembly of large galaxy disks. In this contribution we focus on a new survey of integral-field Hα velocity-maps of nearby, face on disks. Preliminary results yield disk asymmetry amplitudes consistent with estimates based on the scatter in the local Tully-Fisher relation. We also show how the high quality of integral-field echelle spectroscopy enables determinations of kinematic inclinations to i ∼ 20◦. This holds the promise that nearly-face-on galaxies can be included in the TullyFisher relation. Finally, we discuss the prospects for measuring dynamical asymmetries of distant galaxies.

A simple model for accretion disks in the post-Newtonian approximation
p { margin-bottom: 0.1in; direction: ltr; line-height: 120%; text-align: left; }a:link { } In this paper, the evolution of accretion disks in the post-Newtonian limit has been investigated. These disks are formed around gravitational compact objects such as black holes, neutron stars, or white dwarfs. Although most analytical researches have been conducted in this context in the framework o...
متن کاملEvolution of Coated Grains in Spiral Shocks of Self-Gravitating Protoplanetary Disks
We investigate the evolution of grains composed of an ice shell surrounding an olivine core as they pass through a spiral shock in a protoplanetary disk. We use published three-dimensional radiationhydrodynamics simulations of massive self-gravitating protoplanetary disks to extract the thermodynamics of spiral shocks in the region between 10 and 20 AU from the central star. As the density wave...
متن کاملSpiral Galaxies and Tracers of Mass Accretion
Can the present dynamics of spiral galaxies tell us something about the merging history, the formation and evolution of disks? Galaxy interactions thicken or destroy disks; the simultaneous presence of thick and thin disks is a tracer of past accretion, and also of recent disk re-formation. Observation of a large number of counter-rotating disks is also evidence of past mergers, as well as the ...
متن کاملThe ultraviolet visibility and quantitative morphology of galactic disks at low and high redshift
We have used ultraviolet (200 nm) images of the local spiral galaxies M 33, M 51, M 81, M 100, M 101 to compute morphological parameters of galactic disks at this wavelength: half-light radius rhl, surface brightness distributions, asymmetries (A) and concentrations (CA). The visibility and the evolution of the morphological parameters are studied as a function of the redshift. The main results...
متن کاملThe Chemical Evolution of Galaxy Disks
We discuss the main ingredients necessary to build models of chemical evolution of spiral galaxies and in particular the Milky Way galaxy. These ingredients include: the star formation rate, the initial mass function, the stellar yields and the gas flows. Then we discuss models for the chemical evolution of galaxy disks and compare their predictions with the main observational constraints avail...
متن کاملStructure and Evolution of the Opacity of Spiral Disks
The opacity of a spiral disk due to dust absorption influences every measurement we make of it in the UV and optical. Two separate techniques directly measure the total absorption by dust in the disk: calibrated distant galaxy counts and overlapping galaxy pairs. The main results from both so far are a semi-transparent disk with more opaque arms, and a relation between surface brightness and di...
